Our  Great Highland bagpipe is a design made up of a number of elements but not a copy of any. From the basis of our existing knowledge we looked at number of family sets. This centred on set of pipes made for Scott’s Great Grandfather, John MacDougall Snr by Charlie Ewan of Aboyne, Aberdeen-shire in the 1920. There were only 2 sets made the other was for brother Billy which are are sadly lost. Made from African Blackwood and Ivory these pipes have a unique tone and quality. Certain elements of these pipes out performed all the others in terms of sound and stability. After an extensive review we produced a 3D computer model, this reinforced our understanding of why they work ed so well and use that information in all our instruments.

We call our Great Highland Bagpipe the Glentanar , because that was where Scott’s great Grampa was born, the overall design matches all our pipes, sleek and modern inspired by bagpipes before they became a standard design.

And the original 1920 set ? … They have been played continually since the day they were made and today, used at weddings and  all the other everyday life family celebrations.
